All four apps in this comparison solve the same problem: a group spends money together and someone needs to keep score. They differ on price, friction, and how easily you can leave. We build one of them (Splitpond), so read the last column with that in mind — the other rows are as fair as we can make them.

The short answer

  • Splitwise — the most complete product, if someone pays for Pro.
  • Tricount — genuinely free and polished, if you split evenly and don't need your data back.
  • Spliit — the pick if you want open source or want to self-host.
  • Splitpond — the pick if you're leaving Splitwise and want your history to come with you.

How easily can you leave?

Feature tables age badly; lock-in is what you actually feel two years in. This is the table we'd want to read before putting a year of a household's expenses somewhere.

Pick Splitwise if…

…your group already lives there, everyone has the app, and someone's willing to pay for Pro. It's the most mature product with the deepest feature set (currency conversion, itemization, integrations), and for a long-running household ledger that maturity counts.

What you give up is the free tier, which is deliberately hobbled — that's the business model, not an oversight. A daily cap of three or four expenses is fine until the one week a year you're travelling and adding nine things a day. If you're weighing the upgrade, we went through it in detail in is Splitwise Pro worth it?

Pick Tricount if…

…you're in Europe, you split evenly, and you want bank-transfer settle-up via bunq. It is genuinely free with no expense cap, and for straightforward even splits it's a polished app with a long track record.

Know what changed first, though. With version 8.0 bunq ended Tricount's Premium tier — but instead of making those features free, it removed them. On our reading of the change (July 2026), CSV and PDF export, custom splits, expense sorting and personal mode all went away; Tricount's help centre has said custom splits may return in a future update, without giving a date. If you rely on uneven splits or on getting your data out, check the current version before committing — and see our guide for Tricount users.

Pick Spliit if…

…you want open source, and especially if you want to self-host. Spliit pioneered the "a group is a link" model we also use: one person makes a group, shares the URL, and nobody signs up for anything. It's free, there's no expense cap, and there are no ads.

The self-hosting option is the real differentiator, and it's a genuine one. Run your own copy and the data sits on infrastructure you control — no company can change the terms, add a paywall, or shut it down underneath you. Nothing else in this comparison, ours included, can offer that.

The trade-offs are what you'd expect from a community project. Development is community-paced, so features land when someone has time rather than on a roadmap, and receipt scanning is still experimental. There's no Splitwise import, so moving across means re-entering your history by hand. And self-hosting is only free if your time is — someone has to run the server, apply updates and keep the backups honest.

Pick Splitpond if…

…you're leaving Splitwise and want to keep your history, and you'd rather not make everyone in the group sign up for something. Splitpond is the only one of these four that imports a Splitwise export, and it does it without an account for anyone. You also get receipt scanning without a subscription and the unlimited-free promise in writing.

We're the newest of the four and the most focused: split, balance, settle, scan — nothing else yet. There are no native apps, no multi-currency, and no recurring expenses. If you need those today, one of the other three is the better answer, and we'd rather say so here than waste your evening.

What none of them do especially well

Worth saying plainly, because every comparison page on this topic tends to skip it. None of these apps move money for you — Tricount comes closest through bunq, but for everyone else "settle up" means marking in the app that a transfer you made elsewhere happened. Multi-currency is fiddly everywhere, because the honest answer depends on the rate your card used on the day, which no app can know. And receipt scanning misreads things in every implementation we've tried, ours included — it's a good way to avoid typing fifteen line items, not a reason to stop checking the total.

Common questions

Is Spliit really free?

Yes. Spliit is open source and the hosted version is free to use, with no expense cap and no account. Because it is open source you can also run your own copy on your own server, which is the main reason people choose it over the others.

Which expense splitter works without making everyone sign up?

Spliit and Splitpond are both link-based: one person creates the group, shares the URL, and everyone else can add expenses without an account. Tricount lets people join by link but pushes the app. Splitwise requires an account for every participant.

Can I move my Splitwise history into another app?

Splitwise lets you export a group to CSV from its web interface. Of the apps here, Splitpond is the only one that imports that file directly and rebuilds your balances. For the others you would re-enter expenses by hand, so export your data before you close your Splitwise account.

What happened to Tricount export and custom splits?

With version 8.0, bunq ended Tricount Premium. Rather than making the paid features free, our reading of the change in July 2026 is that CSV and PDF export, custom splits, expense sorting and personal mode were removed. Tricount has said custom splits may return, without giving a date.

Is there a free alternative to Splitwise Pro?

Splitwise Pro is roughly $40 a year and its headline features are removing ads, lifting the daily expense limit and receipt scanning. Spliit and Splitpond both have no expense limit and no ads at no cost, and Splitpond includes a monthly allowance of free receipt scans.

Which one is best for a group trip?

If everyone already has Splitwise and someone pays for Pro, staying put is reasonable. If you want people to start adding expenses within seconds of landing, a link-based app avoids the sign-up round trip that usually stalls a group chat.
