Pick Splitwise if…
…your group already lives there and the available plan fits your needs. Pro includes currency conversion, receipt itemization and search. Check who gets access under the chosen plan rather than assuming one person's subscription unlocks everything for everyone.

Pick Tricount if…
…you prefer a mobile app and need custom splits or multi-currency tracking. Its current feature list also includes Splitwise import, offline tracking and payment requests.
Older articles about version 8.0 can be misleading: current custom splits are not the same question as saving a reusable split preset. Pick Spliit if…
…you want open source, and especially if you want to self-host. It supports the "a group is a link" model we also use: one person makes a group, shares the URL, and nobody signs up for anything. It's free, there's no expense cap, and there are no ads.
The self-hosting option is the real differentiator, and it's a genuine one. Run your own copy and the data sits on infrastructure you control. Of the products compared here, Spliit publishes an open-source self-hosting option.
Its site labels AI scanning and recurring expenses as beta features and now lists an iPhone app. Splitwise import remains a possible future feature in the official repository; check the specific version rather than assuming that a separate community fork has the same capabilities. Self-hosting requires someone to handle updates and backups.
Pick Splitpond if…
…you want a browser-based group without sign-up, including a previewed import of supported one-currency Splitwise CSV files. Tricount also imports Splitwise data; our workflow focuses on reviewing entries and limitations before creating the new group. You also get a limited monthly receipt-scan allowance without a subscription and the unlimited-free promise in writing.
We're the newest of the four and the most focused: split, balance, settle, scan — nothing else yet. There are no native apps, no multi-currency, and no recurring expenses. If you need those today, one of the other three is the better answer, and we'd rather say so here than waste your evening.
What to check before choosing
Try a sample expense, an uneven split and an export before moving a live group's history. Confirm whether a repayment action actually sends money or just records a payment made elsewhere; Splitpond only records it. Check currency-conversion rates and review receipt scans before saving. An import preview or a scan is a starting point for your review, not a guarantee that every detail is correct.

Is Spliit really free?
Spliit describes its hosted app as free, without ads or accounts. Its open-source code can also be self-hosted; running your own instance still involves hosting, maintenance and backups.
Which expense splitter works without making everyone sign up?
Spliit and Splitpond support shared group links without individual accounts. Splitpond also offers an optional group PIN. Anyone with an unprotected Splitpond link can access that group, so share it carefully.
Can I move my Splitwise history into another app?
Both Tricount and Splitpond offer Splitwise import workflows. Splitpond accepts supported one-currency CSV exports, shows a preview and warnings, and blocks formats it cannot represent safely. Keep your original export and check the resulting balances before closing the old account.
Does Tricount support custom splits and exports?
Tricount’s current feature list includes custom expense splits. Its help pages describe the old Premium export feature as deprecated, and its FAQ directs users to support for CSV or ODF exports. Check the current workflow rather than assuming every old Premium feature remains unavailable.
Is there a free alternative to Splitwise Pro?
Free alternatives can cover particular needs, but they are not exact replacements for every Pro feature. Spliit, Tricount and Splitpond offer expense tracking without a daily expense cap. Splitpond includes five free scan attempts per group per calendar month, but does not offer currency conversion or native mobile apps.
Which one is best for a group trip?
Choose around the group’s workflow: existing Splitwise history, mobile and currency needs, or a browser link without sign-up. For Splitwise Pro, check which people and groups the selected plan actually covers; one individual subscription does not automatically cover every member.
