You've hit the daily expense limit, or an ad has just eaten ten seconds of your evening, and Splitwise is suggesting you upgrade. Before you do, here's what the subscription actually includes, who it genuinely makes sense for, and which parts you can get for nothing.
We build a competing app, so treat the last section with appropriate suspicion. The breakdown itself is as fair as we can make it — Splitwise Pro is a reasonable purchase for some people, and we'll say so.
What it costs
Splitwise Pro runs around $40 per year in the US as of July 2026, with an equivalent monthly option that works out more expensive annually. Pricing varies by region and Splitwise adjusts it periodically, so check the app for your actual number — the figure shown to you is authoritative, not this page.
Worth noting it's a per-person subscription, not per-group. If two people in a household both want the paid features, that's two subscriptions.

When it's genuinely worth paying
You travel internationally with the same group. Currency conversion is the feature hardest to replace elsewhere. If your group regularly spends across two or three currencies, doing that by hand is miserable and error-prone, and $40 spread across a year of trips is not much.
You itemise restaurant bills often. If your friend group genuinely splits per-dish rather than evenly, itemisation saves real arguments. Few free tools do this well.
Everyone you split with already uses Splitwise. Network effects are real. If six people already have the app, accounts, and history, $40 to remove the friction may beat migrating everyone somewhere else — even to us.
If two or three of those describe you, buy it. It's a mature product and the subscription is fair for that usage.
When it isn't
You're paying purely to lift the expense limit. This is the most common reason people upgrade and the weakest one. You'd be paying an annual subscription to undo a restriction that exists to sell you the subscription. Several free apps have no limit at all.
You split evenly and occasionally. A weekend away twice a year, split down the middle, uses none of what you're paying for.
You only wanted the receipt scanner. It's a nice feature, but it's not $40-a-year nice when free options exist.

The honest arithmetic
$40 a year is roughly $3.30 a month — genuinely not much for software you use weekly. The question isn't whether Splitwise is worth $40; it's whether the specific things Pro unlocks are worth $40 to you. For a group doing multi-currency travel and itemised dinners, easily yes. For someone who just wants to log five expenses on a Saturday without being told to wait until tomorrow, you're buying your way out of an artificial constraint.
A useful test: list the Pro features you'd actually use in the next three months. If it's only "add more expenses per day," that's the one you shouldn't have to pay for.
What we do instead
Splitpond is free with no expense limit — that's a promise written on our About page, not a trial. Receipt scanning is free for five scans per group per month. There are no accounts: you share a link and everyone's in, which matters when you're trying to get four friends to track a trip. Our planned paid tier is not on sale yet. The current proposal is $12 once, not annually, for CSV export and removal of the per-group monthly scan allowance; operational safety limits would still apply. Do not choose Splitpond today on the assumption that those paid features are available.
We're also missing things Splitwise has: no currency conversion yet, no itemisation, no native mobile app. If those are what you're paying for, Pro is the better buy and we'd rather say so than waste your afternoon.
